Transfer files from one partition to another with dual boot?

I just bought the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 64-bit through a student discounted, direct download, and am burning it into a bootable dvd as I write this. I currently run a legal copy of Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit and am trying to figure out the smartest way to "upgrade" - the actual upgrade won't work because you apparently can't go from Vista Home Premium to 7 Professional (yay for me).

So, is this the smartest way to transfer my files without digging up an external hard drive? Install Windows 7 in a new partition and dual boot. Once in 7, pull all of my files from the Vista partition to the new 7 one, then delete the Vista partition?

Is it possible to "pull" files from one partition to the other like that?

Thanks!

Should I install over the partition and allow Windows 7 to create a "Windows old" folder? I'm not concerned about losing my programs; it's my music and documents that I want to bring over. I can reinstall everything else that I'm going to need.

Never mind. I ended up just transferring everything to an external, reformatting, then doing a new install. The "upgrade" disc didn't pose a problem and everything went smooth as silk. Windows 7 is a nice breath of fresh air after Vista.
