Probably the most important issue (not the only one) is that if you are going to run Windows 7 on a new computer and want to have more then 3 gigabytes of ram, you will have to have a 64 bit operating system.

Only the newest software (if any, none of my sofware installed in the normal program files folder except some Adobe CS4 related files and Microsoft stuff) will take advantage of the 64 bit capability but your old stuff will install in a Program Files (x86) directory and run fine.

There may be exceptions: I could not get Adobe Indesign CS2 to run on my new computer, and Adobe told me it was just not compatible, so I have to spend the buck to update to CS4.

However everything else runs fine including all my other Adobe software.

If you are getting a new computer then get Windows 7 64.

If you have a 3 or 4 year old computer and want to upgrade then I would stick with 32 bit.
You will need a new computer by the time that 64 bit becomes the standard anyway.

But 64 bit will replace 32 just the way the 32 replaced 16 eventually.

Mike
