Download a K-lite codec pack.

That download is free, but there has been some questions about the legality of all the included codecs for it in the past. I've been recommending XP Codec Pack: http://www.xpcodecpack.com/

Codecs are used to play different video formats. So, you would be able to use Windows Media Player.

You can also try this popular alternative video player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Video players don't store a copy of the content being played. Some will, however, log a history of what has been played (like your web browser)

No it doesn't. That would be a copyright violation even if it had the ability to do that.

Granted, there is the ability to rip music CDs and add the tracks to the library, but it doesn't do it automatically.

Indirectly. The codecs are loaded into the system, and WMP checks for the codecs that are available in the system for use.

It works on Vista. It's just the name of the particular codec pack. No, it's not a new player, it's a set of codecs.

I've never used WinX Player, so I can't comment on it. All I know is that it's not free.

VLC is the free 3rd-party player I usually turn to. I usually recommend it rather than the codec packs because you don't have to resort to fiddling with any of that stuff.

Yes, there are a few apps with the codec pack. You can remove them. All you're looking for are the codecs.

VLC is a very good media player. You may also consider KM Player. Both are on top of my list.
