Windows media player playes MOV audio but no video

Hello guys. I am not sure what setting may have been changed since I uninstalled and reinstalled ATI drivers at some point, but when I upload .MOV format movies from my Canon camera then try to play it with Windows Media Player the audio playes but no picture is showing.

Can you please tell me what to do with this?

Does Windows Media Player play any other movies? If not, you might need to download codecs.

Hi, have a happy Christmas,
the windows media player plays mp4, as well as older, mov files. The new files from canon camera it doesn't play, but played them before.

I were to reinstall/install needed codecs, where can I download the right ones?

Thanks

before I try to update codecs, can someone tell me what could have happened? I noticed that when I use something like PowerISO to create a virtual drive and load an iso the Windows Media Player doesn't recognize as anything being there. But something like VLC and Windows Media CENTER strangely do.

Also when I put any dvd inside the dvd drive then right click it there is no selection for "play dvd" if I wanted to automatically play dvd when I insert it where can I go to change these options?

Is there an option to entirely uninstall and reinstall this crap Windows Media Player?

Thanks

Sounds like Windows Media Player doesn't like one of the other programs you installed.

If the Codecs don't work, you can go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and uninstall WMP. You can downoad WMP 11 here:

Thanks but that doesn't work. I uninstalled the installed this Microsoft Windows Media Player 12 through the Control Panel, made sure quicktime is installed, but still .MOV file doesn't play, only audio plays.

I think if it were something with video card driver, can it cause this problem?
I know its not corrupt file since it plays by quicktime or VLC player

After testing it, I found out that the video will play in Windows Media Player after it had been opened once or more with "Windows Live Movie Maker" which is ,apparently, one of the Windows 7 updats I recently got.

Any idea what could solve this? Thanks

Still sounds like a missing codec to me too. VLC will play most files regardless of what codecs you have installed on your system, because VLC comes with it's own set of them just for it's own use. Doesn't have to worry about system incompatibilities that way and that's one reason why it's gotten so popular.

That also is a way you might be able to find out the offending codec, if that's what it is. Load that movie in VLC (the one with no video in WMP) and while it's playing, hit Ctrl-J to bring up the Codec Information. There should be two streams there, one for audio, one for video. Look under the video and see what it says by the Codec listing for the video part of it (mp4v, etc). That should be what WMP is missing. The .MOV extension is just a container file wrapped around the actual video file underneath.

Also, I saw you said Quicktime is installed, but is it current or is it an old version that you just know is still on your machine? If it's an old version, it may not support the current file formats and needs to be upgraded to the latest version in order to do so.
