Windows 7 Detected Backup HD As "Primary Device"...
This isn't really a plea for help since it's too late for that.
Just a vent. I just purchased the full version of Windows 7 Ultimate. I have two identical hard drives installed on my system. One of them is used for backup only. During the installation, Windows detected my BACKUP hard drive (Drive D) as my "primary device" instead of Drive C. I ended up reformatting and installing Windows 7 on my backup hard drive, wiping out all of my saved files. I had some of those files stored on an external HD but most of them are now gone. I suppose I'm the only poor soul who's made this mistake?

Lesson to learn - ALWAYS disconnect all usb devices, including card readers, and extra hard drives before installing an operating system. Only have the drive connected that you want to use as the Primary/bootable hard drive.

^Yep.
I was so anxious to install the new OS that I didn't think of doing this. I can remember having to disconnect my card reader before installing XP because it would always be detected as my primary drive. Oh well.

I chose Custom Install & Reformat. My Backup HD was identified as "Drive 0 Primary Device" and the main HD was "Drive 1". The available disc space on both HDs was about the same so I really should have either checked exactly how much space was available on each drive before installing Windows 7 or, as Panama Red mentioned, disconnect ALL other devices. I assumed Windows 7 would be much more advanced than XP in every aspect. It all comes down to user error.
