Angry Fire Help ! Removing AOL from laptop (Vista OS)

Hello,
I convinced a older friend to finally leave AOL dial-up & move to Verizon DSL w/ a Linksys wireless router.

I now got stuck trying to get this mess sorted out. I'm a XP person so I don't have alot of Vista experience. HELP!
Did the basics like "Add/Remove" everything that was noted as AOL. But it looks like AOL may have corrupted my IE.

When I double-click my IE, a pop-up says:
"Cannot find 'file:///C:/Program%20Files/AOL%20Toolbar/welcome.html'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct."

Any suggestions?
All I hear now is "I didn't have those problems with AOL..."

Are you using a created shortcut for IE? If so, delete it and recreate it from the Start (pearl) menu link.

Or, better yet, install Firefox.

Hello,

I tried to open IE8 from the program list & AOL Toolbar box was un-checked.
Same pop up occurs...

Did a virus scan, disk clean-up & defrag. hoping the correct files may come into play. no luck.

Thanks...

Hello,
Installed the CCleaner. fixed alot of bad registry files. PC seems to run a bit faster now, but I still get that darn message as before.

Considering Firefox...
Can I uninstall Firefox if I don't like it as a browser? Will Firefox erase IE8 ?

Thanks!

Yes, you can uninstall Firefox if you don't like it, and no it doesn't erase any i.e. files.

Agreed...But if you give Firefox a chance and spend a little time with it you'll never go back to IE, except for sites that require it.....IMHO..

Try uninstalling IE8, this should revert you to IE7. See if you get the same error. If not, then reinstall IE8.

True dat and I even have an add on for Firefox that makes sites you HAVE to use I.E. even less. I need to find it for my netbook as I don't have it on here yet. I haven't need it yet though on here. It helped quite a bit on my old Win98SE computer and 3.0 Firefox.

Hello,
Firefox did the trick... I didn't get chance to reload IE7 or IE8.
Firefox somehow covered up the problem popup.
I gave the laptop back today...I guess I'll just wait to see what happens next. I suppose AOL may never be truely removed without a OS reload.

Thank You For All Your Help!

AOL hates it when their sheep run off to another flock. They would of course like to their sheep contained and have been known in the past to do things to keep them from straying. I'm surprised AOL has not gone the way of Netscape. Some people though will never leave AOL. They think that is the way to surf the internet because they have been with AOL forever and have never known any better.

Do not wish to digress..but I'm guessing that AOL will follow the way of the dodo bird sooner than one expects.

I agree with most, if not all of this.
