How dual boot in W7
Hello,
how do you dual boot to XP in Windows 7 32 bit? What's the phrasing for the boot.ini - if there is a boot.ini. And is it possible to add W7 to the XP's boot.ini? Cheers, Dazzer |

Hi
When I did it, it happened on it's own when I installed Windows 7. I think is is a little more complex then editing the boot.ini Check out this program... http://neosmart.net/gallery/v/neosmart/EasyBCD/1_70/ I used it when I wanted to stop dual booting and boot only Windows 7 and it worked great. Win 7 doesn't use the boot.ini file....Win 7 will automatically create a dual boot menu...

I worked through the dual boot instructions, but now in XP, my PC shuts down withing a minute or two of booting saying Windows is unwell.
I have two distinct drives a W7 and XP. Both were built independently, because you cannot upgrade directly from XP to W7. I installed a raw XP so I could install the W7 upgrade. When I run BCD it keeps asking for Vista files, which of course I haven't got. Now my PC keeps crashing. I'm going to uninstall BCD - hopefully that will fix things. If not I get I'll need to do a XP repair. What fun. Not sure I want to persevere with my dual boot attempt, unless there's an obvious step I've missed. Thanks for help on this. Any further advise would be much appreciated. Dazzer |

When I dual booted both XP and Windows 7, I started with XP installed on my C:\ drive.
I ran the Windows 7 installation, selecting my D:\ drive as the target. Note: this was not from an upgrade DVD. When I finished the installation the computer rebooted and gave me a choice of which operating system I wanted to boot into. I think maybe the problem that you are having has something to do with trying to upgrade to a different drive then XP is installed on. It's possible that the computer wants to replace XP when it does the upgrade. You may need to upgrade your XP to Windows 7 and then install XP to the second hard drive. I have to say that I have found no reason to dual boot since I switched to my new Windows 7 Home Premium computer. I have found nothing that wouldn't run in Windows 7 even my old Tomb Raider games. My only driver issue was with my scanner which was so old that there are no 64 bit drivers available for it. I got around this by finding other software that would run the scanner anyway. Mike |
