Windows 7 evaluation copy problems

I bought a laptop from my roommate that had windows 7 ultimate evaluation copy on it but now that has expired. He gave me a code for the actual copy that looked like this: RBK9V-CVC36-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx (the xs are so I keep someone from stealing it) but it won't work as the serial code so the laptop restarts every 2 hours. anybody have any ideas where i should enter the code so it will work? Thanks.

My computer > system properties
at the bottom of the window it should give you the option to enter in a activation key.

You cannot upgrade the evaluation copy to the retail version, you must do a fresh install using a retail disk.

Thanks a lot. Another roommate got a copy of the business edition of 7 through our school that he doesn't need. What would be the best way to back up all of my files from the evaluation copy so that I could easily put them on the business edition after I format my computer? I have an external hard drive.

Copy and paste the files you need.

By the way, those evaluation copy codes only work once. Now that it's in the expiration phase, that's a moot point.

He told me that the code would magically turn the evaluation copy into the actual version of Windows 7 Ultimate
