"unknown error" for windows update on vista

I have someone running Vista SP2 who can't run windows update because it looks like there's an update that got "stuck"

Every time they try to run windows update, they get asked to install hotfix KB977165. They try to go ahead to install it, but it doesn't actually install and instead throws an "unknown error" with the error code 80070570.

I'm trying to troubleshoot over the phone, so I've had them try a few different things that I found through searches, but so far nothing has fixed it.

I'm guessing that the update got corrupted, but I'm not sure how to remove it. I've already had them delete everything in the C:/windows/softwaredistribution/downloads folder.

Any suggestions?

With some googling it seems the 80070570 = Can't open the file.

Edit: didn't read your post 100%...took link off.

What happens if they disabled the firewall?

What about a rebuild of the Windows Update service?

I'm guessing a system restore is the last possible option that I can think of.

Nope, the fix tool didn't do anything.

System Restore isn't unfortunately an option. The restore points don't go back far enough.

The other two updates listed in the thread don't apply for vista SP2.

Ok, I finally have my hands on this thing instead of attempting to work on it via the phone, and I went through some of the basic troubleshooting stuff...no luck.

No malware, no viruses, and cleaned out temp files & registry with ccleaner.

Any ideas?
