Remote accessing another computer

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium in Florida and my cousin is running Windows XP Home Premium. I have DSL and he has a cable connection. Is it possible for me to remotely connect to his computer via Windows?

If I can't connect via Windows, is there a free software program that I could use? Also, if I can use Windows, is there a better option? Thanks.

You can connect by using Remote Desktop and then opening port 3389 on the remote firewall/router. You can do port forwarding to use a different port. There is also gotomypc which some here recommend.

Both of you download, "Team Viewer 5" and either one of you can have a remote connection.

Personally this is easier than with Windows Remote Desktop....just my opinion.

Another one is Logmein.

I prefer Logmein. Make sure you get the free version, not the pro trial. Gotomypc is too expensive.

Little FYI - XP Home doesn't have Remote Desktop...You can get the following to call out to another pc...but then can connect to you.

Remote Desktop Connection Software Download

This software package will install the client portion of Remote Desktop on any of the following operating systems: Windows 95, Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000. (This is the same version of the client software as in Windows XP Service Pack 1.) When run, this software allows older Windows platforms to remotely connect to a computer running Windows XP Professional with Remote Desktop enabled.

The problem with remote desktop is this - the computer you want to access must have a static local IP, the port must be forwarded in the router, and you need to know the real IP which is subject to change. Logmein doesn't need any of this, it just has to have the client running. You log in with a username and password.
