page file seperate from system files
I didn't want to hijack the other thread.
dual booting XP and 7 My dual boot setup has my page file on one one drive, and my system fles ar on the other. I had chosen to put 7 on my other drive to eventually wipe the drive that had XP on it. But I've been getting out of memory messages. So is it possible to to dual boot and have XP one drive and the Win 7 on the second drive? Without getting my page file seperated from my system files? Or did I just get lucky? ![]() I've already decided to reformat. My drives are already split up, both drives have two partitiions.

keep the page file on the same drive....even if its a SSD drive...
if you are getting teh message either the page file isnt accessible (turned off) or its not big enough... just set it to Let Windows Manage the size and forget about it...it only hits the page file whent he ram is full I have yet to hit it with 4 gig installed...or so I think

Thanks for the reply Max. I did just reinstall everything, I put both OS on one drive. I was planning on eventually going with one OS, but I found I like XP better for somethings and 7 runs my vid card better.
I kinda wanted them on seperate drives, just in case one of the drives decides to fail, but it turned into a nightmare. |

how so...thats how I do it....
I just install the OS and then unplug the drive and install the other OS...doesnt make a bit of difference which one you do first if you do it that way... you dont get the Dual-Boot option but I dont want it...I just hit whatever F key gets me the boot order select int he BIOS and change it there on the fly... I dont boot into XP very often at all...so far prolly 3-4 times this last year... |

I was set up that way. But I just changed the boot order in bios. Anyway; when I tried a dual boot, somehow the page file got seperated from the system files. When I looked at the disk management it showed the system on the win 7 drive and the page file on the drive with XP. I started getting out of memory errors with 4 gig. It's the system in my sig. So I just reformatted.
It works, I have a seperate drive for my backups. I decided to just consolidat the second drive to one partition. I kinda like the dual boot option. I find I use XP more than 7. That's probably because I'm just more use to XP. But I'm loading my games to 7. Not sure why, but I can see a huge jump in performance of my vid card with 7. And 7 seems to have better bacwards compatability with older games. I'm also using programs that don't take advantage of the 64 bit OS. I'm gonna have to give some of the newer programs a try. I'm so use to DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink that newer progams are just about intimidating. Both programs work in 7 but I don't see any advantage in under7, so use I them under XP. |
