Vista Service Packs

Are these crucial or are they like the XP SP3 which can be skipped?

I'm concerned mainly with their impact on system performance. M$ says that the SP1 improves performance; I wonder if this is indeed true. Some of these machines are already slow and I'm concerned they'd be made even slower.

TIA

First off your VERY late in terms of service packs for Vista it's 2010. I still use Vista and notice a huge improvement after SP1 not so much with SP2.

There work on for a reason and have shown improvement and are recommended by the creator of your OS, so why not?

Believe you me, some customers have none of the Vista service packs installed on their machines. I don't think I have the latest on my laptop either, I seldom update Windows.

Also, when we have to reformat HDDs or restore machines to factory defaults, none of the SPs are present upon first booting the system.

True, there are many people out there, that don't even know what window updates are. Ive found specifically with system builds, not OEM, lots of crashes with both newer and older hardware, right after an installing Vista without any service packs.

I don't think I ever notice a slowdown, slight improvements. I went through the trouble of creating a slipstream disc with both service packs so its saved me the nightmare of reinstalling Vista.

Vista is a pain in the a when it comes to hardware, if systems are already slow I would try a couple and see. If the hardware is crappy to begin with; it might not help too much.

It's mostly laptops. We don't do clones or custom builds.

OS updates also include patches for security holes. You probably don't want to leave your system more vulnerable to the bad guys.

You NEED the latest service pack. Vista is bad enough to begin with.

With XP, you now NEED SP3. Without it, you cannot get any more critical updates.
