Transfer fax inbox from Win XP to Win 7
I installed Windows 7 on a friend's computer (clean install) and now I am trying to copy the inbox faxes to it. After installing Windows 7 I sent a fax to the computer to be sure I had the correct fax inbox folder. Then I copied the fax files from Windows XP to the fax folder in Windows 7 to the same folder the received fax is in. When I open up the fax program the only fax I can see is the one received by the computer and not the faxes I copied. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Wouldnt hurt to mention the name of the fax app...
Does it have an import/export option? |

The fax program that I am using is the one that comes with Windows for both XP and Windows 7. I could not find an export option in XP or an import option in Win 7.

I haven't tried windows 7, but it seems you guys are talking with fax features of windows 7. With the statement above mention I can't configure out the problem maybe sooner or later we can figure out the problem.

I am able to receive faxes in Windows 7. I just can't view the faxes in the inbox that I have copied from XP to Windows 7. The computer is set up to only receive faxes as we don't send faxes from that computer.

Rob, it can't be done.
However, I believe the faxes are standard .tif files - which can be viewed. You can't get them to show up within the fax program, but they can be opened with an image viewer. Move the old faxes to a new folder somewhere and create a shortcut to the folder - when you open the folder you can double click on any of the files and they should open in the Windows default .tif viewer. The file names won't make much sense, but sorry, that's your only workaround. Last edited by glc; 08-03-2010 at 12:07 PM. |

Thanks glc for the info. I will try it on Thursday. The names currently don't make any sense so that is not a problem. My friend keeps certain faxes just in case. There are only about 25 so that is not a big problem.
Though I probably haven't said it, I want to let you know that I have respected and appreciated your computer knowledge and wisdom over the years even as I read other posts. Thanks again. |

I downloaded the files to a folder and when I clicked on one it opened up and displayed the fax. I didn't have to install any additional software. Thanks again.

Right. It's just you can't get them to show up within the fax program.
I'm assuming it opened in the standard Windows image viewer? |

Yes, it opened with the standard image viewer. It's strange that they they will not show up in the same same folder as new incoming faxes because they are both .tif files. Though I don't understand it, I will just accept it and at least they can still be viewed if needed.
