Can't change product key

Hey everyone,

Just having some minor difficulties here... So lately windows has been telling me that my copy of windows is not genuine -.- even though it is, I bought it last fall. Anyways so I called Microsoft support... got me nowhere except on hold for about 20 minutes and with no answers. Anyways I wanted to try something that I thought my fix the problem. I figure if I change the product key (just reenter my existing product key) the stupid WGA thing will go away. However, here's my problem... I go to Computer > Properties, this is where your product ID is and there's a small text link at the bottom that says "Change Product Key" but every time I click it, nothing happens, nothing loads.

Is there any way to get around this or am I screwed and have to call MS again.... lol thanks in advance.

P.S. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium (probably should have mentioned that earlier).

Thanks!

Click on the Start Button and type: CMD (into the 'Search programs and files' field in the Start Menu)
The Start Menu will show 'CMD.exe',
Right-click the CMD.exe file and select Run As Administrator.
In the CMD window, type: slmgr.vbs -ipk (followed by the product key)
To activate windows after changing the key, type: slmgr.vbs -ato

I tried that and.... upon entering the first command I got "Windows something Service found the key to be invalid" -.- and then when I entered the second command to activate the key it said my product was activated successfully... I'm officially confused haha.

You sure you are reading the code correctly?

Where did you buy your copy of Windows?

Odds are that re-entering the same key isn't going to help you. The key you originally entered was apparently valid - it just wasn't legit.

Get back on the phone to Microsoft and wait a lengthy period of time to speak to a nice guy named "Bob" who works at 10 cents per call who reads from a script off his monitor in a far away third world country.

"Bob" will have you read off a bunch of numbers and then he will give you a bunch of numbers to enter. Then it will be validated provided it was legitimate to begin with.

I would try a full virus, malware, spyware scan and cleaning out all your temp files. Basically a full clean up and check over of your pc.

And you could also try wiping your(using killdisc ect.) HD and doing a completely fresh install of windows, but make sure to backup anything you need to keep if you are willing to go that far.

there is an issue that some patches are black listing valid keys....

I got a friend that had 2 retail copies of pro black listed....it took 2 hours for them to fix it...

I have even heard it has happened to a few MSDN and Technet subscribers

when ever I call MS I do NOT use the outsourced 1-800 number....I use the toll number...
