Windows Vista 64 - Applications freeze

I have a computer that constantly freezes. I can load it, everything seems ok, but when I run an application (even internet explorer), everything freezes.
Is there a common problem with Vista 64, or some known issue?
I couldn't even download an update antivirus, because the download would freeze midway through.
Any recommendations (besides restoring it) would be great.

Thanks!

Anyone here would just be guessing as to what problems you could be having. Now its not normal for an operating just to freeze, obviously.

Any new hardware lately? Is this a custom build? Model number/hardware information is needed, was this a clean install??

Too many unknowns!

Sorry, didn't have the computer in front of me when I was posting.

The computer is an Asus G50V, running Vista 64 Home Premium, standard hardware, no upgrades. Intel Cor2 Duo 2.13ghz 4gb Ram

I have been able to run the antivirus in safe-mode, but, it still freezes when I tried to install firefox.

So, this is a fresh install of Vista, right? Did you just build this machine or have you had it running a 32-bit OS before?

So its a notebook and this just started happening?? Or did you do a recovery??

Either way first try a system restore to an earlier point.

If its a new install of Vista, you probably did something wrong and should reinstall.

The notebook is a year old, and this started happening a few months back. The 64-bit was factory installed.

Have you tried to see if it's overheating? Do you hear the fan spinning? You could do a restore to factory defaults, if the problem continues to happen after that, then it's hardware related.
