server 2008 hyper-v

so if i have a box with server 2008 as the only os can i then create virtual machine from within that os? does this eliminate the need to use vmware, virtualbox, etc...?

Yes, Server 2008 with Hyper-V is all need. You can install stuff on the server itself and run virtual machines under it at the same time. (For example, I run my FTP daemon on the server itself.)
