Opens docs in Notepad, not Word.

Hi all,
I am a new member to the site but had been browsing for a while.
Can you please help.

I have a bog standard Packard Bell from PC world, running Windows XP Home. For some time now, a year, when I open a word attachment it fails to open in Word, but instead opens in Notepad and is so "coded" it cannot be read.

Also, more recently, I am unable to access my Internet Options from the Tools menu. A message says that the operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on my computer. The icon has also disappeared from the desk top but has been replaced by one that says Indexing. I'm sure I have not seen this one before.

I hope you can help.
Regards,
Volvomanx

Using Windows Explorer, hold down the Shift key and right-click on a .doc file. Select Open With. Check the box for "always use....." and choose Word.

Hi glc,
Many thanks for your advice, which has worked perfectly. I can now open my attachments in Word and read them. What a star chap.
