Wanting to dual boot XP and Win 7

I would like to have a dual boot with XP and Win 7. My disk of Win 7 requires me to "upgrade" from XP. Can I load XP on one of my drives (other than my current "C" drive) without damaging my current XP install and then upgrade to Win 7 on the other drive?

Wasn't sure if I could actually have 2 loads on Win XP on the same system even though they would be on different drives. Just wanting to try Win 7 before I make a complete changeover as I am currently happy with XP and really don't have a huge "need" for an OS change.

Also, how would I actually access Win 7 if it is on another HDD, since I would still be using XP from the "C" drive as my primary boot OS.

You can have more than one XP install.

Just install the new OS on the second hard drive, Windows 7 will create a boot loader that will reside on your main hard drive, which will allow you to boot into either OS without a hitch.

Legally - if you upgrade XP you aren't suppose to use it again...That's why you got a less expensive price

Unlike XP's update version that just required you to have a disk.

The win 7 update version does not actually update the OS, it replaces the entirely. The update version just requires you to have XP or Vista actually installed on a hdd before you can use it.

My Win XP is a multiple install disc, no activations required. My Win 7 is a "one time" install with any further installs by phone support to IT only.

One time install? Did you purchase a DVD or just a key?

It is a DVD purchased from a University that has a licensing agreement with MS. Win 7 is allowed to be installed on only one computer. If you want to install on a second or more, you have to contact the University for that. Don't really know how it knows the difference but they say it does.

Guess it actually is not a "one time" install just a single computer install. Sorry for the misinformation. Just read the data sheet that came with it incorrectly.

The upgrade version of Win 7 does NOT have to be installed over XP. It CAN be installed clean. Google will find the procedure for you.
