upgrading my computer

I recently installed windows 7 on my homebuilt computer and now wish to upgrade to a faster cpu and motherboard, will that mean that i have to purchase a new copy windows 7 as well since supposedly you are only allowed to install the operating system on a single system.

Nope. It can be reactivated by phone, just explain what you did. It's one system at a time.

I think the one case where what glc says is not true is if you used an OEM version of Win 7. The OEM version is "married" to a single system and cannot be transferred.

That is not necessarily the case - again, discussing this with an agent on the phone will get you a new activation code. The only OEM that can NOT be transferred is a load that comes with a name brand computer that uses a recovery partition and/or a proprietary recovery CD/DVD. The OEM that you buy from Newegg or other such vendors can be transferred. M$ is not out to screw the hobbyists that build their own computers and routinely upgrade them.
