Win 7 & the "not responding" fade
Hello, I'm wondering if there is a way to stop Win 7 from fading to mostly white and displaying the "close program, wait for program to respond" window when a program is crunching numbers.
I do 3D CAD modeling, and some files take a few minutes to rebuild. This stupid screen comes up every rebuild and is really annoying. I'd like it to be like Win XP, where it would just silently crunch along until done. Maybe there is an option somewhere? Thanks in advance.

It could be a software conflict or maybe some kind of virus causing it. Try these and see if it helps.
1. Download, Install and run a free copy of Superantispyware and it should do the job. 2. Also run the microsoft version of the malicious software removal tool and see if there's an infection. Either one of the above should fix your problem. Cheers, Clifford Last edited by glc; 09-29-2010 at 10:33 PM. Reason: Removed links to sites that are not the software source |

I don't think this is a result of a virus or malware. It is simply the way Win 7 handles unresponsive programs. The problem is that the CAD program (solidworks) is crunching numbers and windows THINKS it is unresponsive and is asking if I want to force it to close, or wait longer. What I don't like is that the screen fades to nearly white, and does this on average of about 3-4 times per hour, depending on how often I need to rebuild the file. I wish it would behave more like XP, where the hour glass would simply spin until done.
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to make windows either A) ignore that there is a program not responding, or B) make it so it doesn't make the screen go white during the rest of the time Solidworks is "thinking". Windows doesn't seem to differentiate between a program that crashed, and one that is crunching numbers. Last edited by stump; 09-30-2010 at 12:10 PM. If there's no built-in "processing" feature built into the program, then yes, the UI will freeze and windows 7 will alert you to that fact. Windows XP would freeze, but not alert you in any way.
It's a feature of Windows 7.

I get this when opening large images in Photoshop, and when generating large .avi files from my 3D software.
It's annoying to have it tell me that it has stopped responding when I know it is just working hard. There doesn't seem to be anything you can do but wait it out. Last edited by MikeMoss; 10-01-2010 at 09:25 AM. |

Aaahh well, I was hoping one of the many PC gurus out here knew of a hidden setting or even a registry hack to resolve this annoyance. If anyone thinks of something, don't hesitate to post. In the mean time I'll try getting used to it.

If it'll make you feel any better....I support an expensive accounting software for a living...During large tasks, the title bar will display (not responding) even though it really is still working on the request.
I get a lot of calls on it..

You know that even if it did the same thing and said, "Working" instead of "Not Responding" I'd feel better about it.
