trojan in 7 starter

I was told by the microsoft security essentials alert that i have a severe alert level with a trojan virus. Is this for real? it seems like it wants you to go online and download other antivirus programs. I have norton and it didn't seem to find it. The alert keeps coming up and i can;t get rid of it or go online. What to do?many thanks in advance

The fact that you can no longer go online is an indication of malware.

Forget any pop up window that says you have some sort of malware no matter how legitimate it may look.

Ignore the popup window and go directly to the software listed under Programs in your system tray. Open it from there and see what your anti-malware software has to say.

Dump your Temp folder, many malware infections love to put their executables there. Sometimes just by dumping that folder the infection is taken care of. You should find your Temp folder in C:\Users\%User%\Local Settings\Temp.

Note that you have to enable Show hidden folders and files in Folder Options in Control Panel.

Hi

I cleaned it out of a friends computer just a few weeks ago.

If you have a computer that will get online download "Malwarebytes, and Super Antispyware.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloads

Make sure you select the free version.

Run both of them from a USB memory stick in safe mode on the infected computer. I don't remember which of them did the trick.

They should get rid of the trojan.

If that doesn't work you can try...

Remove Antivirus Trojan, removal instructions

To get your computer back on line you will have to go into options on your browser and change your Lan settings back to automatic. The trojan changes them to a specific server.

Mike

I would.

Oh, and delete also the contents of "C:Windows\Temp".

I also advise to disable System Restore in order to delete your restore points to prevent the malware from reinstalling itself once you have cleaned it out by any of the several methods suggested.

I would be the system into Safemode with network option, get online and get ccleaner, Malbytes ware, and super antiSpyware to clean your system.
