Question Win 7 repair

Hi Gang

Going at this with a diff approach. I have used the repair feature in XP, is it possible to do the same with Win 7 Ultimate.?

I am thinking what is going on with my mail and the Icons/programs might be with my OS.

Thanx...Gunny

Yes repair is basically the same. Odds are it won't help with the icon issue.

Here's a step by step description of the process.
It is different from XP in a couple of ways.
According to this you can not do it by booting to the DVD.

Hi Ezy

I was thinking that too, but when you are grabbing at straws, you have to be willing to try anything. Care to tell me why you don't think this will solve it.?

The thing that really throws me is they are not just empty Icons, the programs are still there.

A repair install can't tell which programs/icons and what nots that you'd like to keep or get rid of

Hi Ezy

Good point, does make sense. I was thinking if something got screwed up in the registry that is causing this, doing the repair would catch it.

Ok then if not that, what.?

Have you tried doing this by going back in time with a System Restore?

Hi David

I might have said this before, the restore points are right up to today, or yesterday. When you run these Malware sites they bring your retsore ponts right up to date. Does this answer your question.?

Red,
It's not any of my business since I am not a mod but you have two threads on the same subject. http://www.pcmech.com/forum/windows-...rid-icons.html Pick one or the other thread to solve your problem.

First, did you do what Nuclear suggested in your other thread of deleting the software from Control Panel/Programs? As Nuclear stated, deleting desktop shortcuts does not delete software.

Hi David

Ya I have.

I know I have two of them going, I was not getting any hits on the first one, so I thought I would approach it in a diff way. Now they are both going. I know this is causing a problem but don't know how to combine them, sorry. Do you.?

Hi

I don't have them on my desktop right now because I did the Windows uninstall, I deleted all the folders, etc. Now I bet when I reboot they will be back, what are my odds.?

Only a mod can merge threads. I have already sent them a notification. (the little exclamation icon on the lower left)

You wiped Windows? It was not necessary to do that to solve your problem.

Hi David

Sorry I see what you mean, no we are ok with that. I meant using the uninstalling through Windows.

Now after doing all the uninstalling, etc. I rebooted and they are back, just like I have done nothing.

Hi David

I guess you are missing some of my posts. I said it a couple of times there is no restore that is old enough to go back too. When you do those Malware scans, that moves your restore point right up to the present.

I am trying that Moveonboot now, will let you know how that goes, I am trying it on the other one not Safari. That will be next.

So, are those programs running in as you are trying to uninstall them? That may be the cause of the problem.

Have you another computer you can use to hook this one's hard drive to?

I think it's time to uninstall them a lo bruto.

Hi Nuc

It usually tells you if they are running when trying to uninstall, and I do what is nec to have them not running when uninstalling them. So no they are not running when I do the uninstall.

And I do have another computer.

What does Lo Bruto mean.?

a lo bruto: (from Castilian) by means of brute force.

OK. Clean your temporary folders' contents. c:\Windows and c:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Temp

Then try uninstalling them.

Ok Nuc

Lets get tough with this I am tired of fooling around with it. I hate things like this, and I am guessing you do too. I love to solve things like this, but it gets to a point where, ok you will not cooperate with me, then a lo bruto.

Hi All

I just found something see if you have heard of this, my wife was Googling this Phantom Armor and a lot of people are having problem getting rid of it. Now when I go into my computer my HD shows a little like Question mark on it in red, because it is being protected. Could this be why I cannot get rid of it and Safari. It is like my HD is locked down in protection mode. Make sense.?

So if we find out how to get your HD out of protection mode, we will be able to delete things like normal.

Thanx...Gunny

Back up your data, if you haven't done so already.

Is this Phantom Armor protection or whatever? If so, it looks like a rogue antimalware program.

Back up your data and then it's time to hook up this hard drive to another machine and run malware scans with MBAM.

Hi Nuc

Did you read my last post.? This is a legit program, it is Phantom Armor protection alright. So doing the malware thing won't do any good I don't think. Reading about this program is you have to get your HD out of this protective mode. Then the program will uninstall like it should. They are saying this program is very buggy, and you have to keep trying to get the program to do this right.

I would download Revo Uninstaller (free) and let it uninstall that Phantom Armor thing, it will remove all registry items for that program and I'm thinking your problem is over.

Hi All

That was it. You have to get that buggy program to unprotect your HD before you can do anything more. You have to open that program up, and keep trying to get it to unprotect your HD. Then as soon as your HD is unprotected you can remove it and anything else you want too. There are several Apple apps that are there too you should get rid of.

If you want me to explain the whole thing I can do that too.

Thanx....Gunny
