windows 7/64 unexpected I/O error on boot

When booting my desktop computer I get a windows boot manager black screen with” File:\boot\BCD Status: 0xc00000e9 unexpected I/O error has occurred” message. If I boot to CD/DVD using my windows recovery disk and select keyboard US, I get two options: Restore using system image or use recovery tools. When I select system image and next, no image is found. When I select recovery tools, I am asked to choose an operating system. Now my problem is no operating system is listed. What can I do now to recover my system? I am running windows 7/64 on a system that has not given me problems in the past and the freeze occurred while using adobe elements.
