Toshiba laptop locks up

Vista freezes up after boot. I thought I had a heat problem but it does not freeze up in safe mode.

In the 1 min it does run in normal mode before it locks up everything is fine.

Any help/ideas would sure be appreciated. This is driving me nuts.

Access your "startup" applications through msconfig and shut-off all on a startup. Through a process of elimination, introduce one at the time.

Whilst in Safe-Mode (start Safe-Mode with Networking, so that you have Internet access) do a scan for viruses using an online scanner such as housecall.trendmicro.com and a malware scan using Malwarebytes' Antimalware.

Also, disable System Restore, and delete the contents of C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Temp.

Prior to doing what's suggested above, go to Control Panel and, under Folder Options > View, select Show hidden files, folders, etc., and uncheck Hide protected operating system files, click Yes on the popup that will, well, pop up, and then click OK. Now you can access the locations mentioned above and delete their contents.

I did all you guys said and computer shut down IN 1/2 HR
It looks like a heat problem don't you think? I can't get to the heat sink with out taking the whole dam LT apart. It is sitting on a pad w/fans.

This is my sons LT and I don't know where he had it.

When I ran win start up repair it had 10 items and 2 said corrupt file+Wrp repair.

I can get the keeper files from the HD. Should I do that and try the back up discs ?

ANY IDEAS ???

This may be a long shot but I have a Toshiba laptop that had a similar problem, though more random. It would just freeze. The mouse, everything would stop and I would have to do a hard reset.

It turns out my laptopt had some sort of bug and I fixed it by going into the advanced power management settings and under "Processor Power Management", changed the "Minimum CPU State" to 100%. I haven't had a problem since.

Your problem may very well be a heat issue or a hard drive problem. You should definitely backup any important files and run the diagnostics tool from the hard drive manufacturer. You should also check the temps with something like SpeedFan. If your temps are fine I would try changing that setting.

Try Power Options. I haven't used Vista for a while but I believ it's similar to 7.

Ya, Power Options in the Control Panel.

Alternatively, you can right click the battery icon on the system tray and choose Power Options (Power Management) from the contextual menu.

Hi-HO

In my acer/vista I can go right to cpu settings through "acer power management" but in the Toshiba I do not have that option. Do you remeber what link you used on your Toshiba ?

I can't say for sure it's the same on Vista but it should be pretty close. Here's how I get to it on 7.

Thanks guys but it was a no go. I still think it is running to hot. What's with Toshiba ?

I see a whole page on google about overheating problems. Could the ram be bad when it is hot ?I put the LT outside this AM where it was 40 degrees and it ran for 15 min before lock up.

It may just be dirty. The fan/heatsink is probably clogged with dust.

fan works good but they have no door where you can clean it. You need to take the whole dam LT apart to get to the heat sink/fan I will junk it I guess. I have a Acer that will be here Tues for my kid.

Yes, if you load the recovery disks, you will lose everything. You need to back up your data files.
