Question Question ??????

Hi Gang

I don't really know if this question belongs in any thing PCmech has here, but you know me by now I am going to ask it anyway. At least some might be able to answer part of it.

I have 2 computers, an XP and a Win 7. Ok I am with AT&T/Yahoo as my provider. I don't like using Yahoo mail, so I have Microsoft Outlook 2010, and I use their mail service. Works great except for one thing.

When ever I open up Outlook mail, or go to send a e-mail I get this little box saying, "The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified". This happens only to my Win 7 computer not the XP.

Now my question is when they say server, are they referring to AT&T, Microsoft, or Yahoo. I can click either yes or no to the little box and it don't seem to make any diff which one. It gives you a choice of viewing the certificate, but that don't want any sense to me.

I have changed several things in Outlook to see if it makes any changes to this, no luck, in the security section, etc.

Thanx....Gunny

Are you using Outlook 2010 on both computers?

Do you have more than one account?

OK, next stupid question: are all the settings in both computers exactly the same?

Also, does the problem happen with only one account, or with both?

Final stupid question, did you set the accounts on the offending machine exactly as the account provider specified in their setup sheet?

Hi Nuc

Yes on all that, you have to have them set the same in order for them to send and receive right. And it only happens on the Win 7 computer. And if you mean the overall settings on both machines, they are pretty close, on things that would affect this I believe.

Thanx.......Gunny....Sorry so slow I am making home made chicken noodle soup.

You can try downloading mail from only one of the accounts to see if the notification pops up again, in order to see whose server it's referring to.

My take on the situation is that M$, the ever updater, has, well, updated its requirements for security certificates and the host has been too slow to catch up or simply not interested in complying with M$'s requirements for whatever reason. Kinda like the warning that Windows gives when you try to install drivers that haven't been certified by M$ Hardware Labs; even though the drivers are legitimate and the manufacturer guarantees that they work just fine, if M$ hasn't give them its "blessing" the notification will continue to pop up.

Hi Nuc

So who are you saying that I should go and shake their cages, Yahoo, Mocro$, ? By host you mean Yahoo.? I have that special account from Yahoo so that you can do this Outlook mail thing, costs an extra $20 a year. Plus it takes the ads away too.

If you mean downloading mail from one account I have done that. But if you are saying I should uninstall the mail account on say the XP computer and see if this happens to the mail in the Win 7 computer, I have not done that. Only have one account.? Might be a conflict there.?

Thanx....Gunny

Ya, by host I mean whoever provides you with the E-mail service.

I was thinking that you had an account with Yahoo and another one with your ISP (AT&T is it?); hence my suggestion of retrieving the mail from only one of them to see if Outlook complained. No, I don't mean uninstalling or even disabling them: Outlook gives you the option to retrieve mail from only one account at a given time: next to the "Send and Receive" button there's a downwards-pointing, little arrow that you can click to send & retrieve mail from all accounts, or only one of them.

And as for who has to get its poopee together, I'd say all of them, but trying saying that to them.

Just accept the certificate.

You sure this doesn't have something to do with one of the many little toys you have installed?

Hi GLC

There you are, where have you been, taking a few days off.?

I do accept the certificate, but it keeps coming back whether I accept it or not. I wish just accepting it would satisfy it, and not keep coming back. Am I the only one that has had this happen too.? Naa I can't be. Or don't any of you use Outlook mail.?

What little toys are you referring too.? Toys, toys, I don't have any stinking toys' :-)

Gunny, I just returned from a 5 week road trip with limited Internet access.

I'm referring to all the little utilities that you seem to be fond of. I believe I just read a thread of yours where one of them caused a system issue. Please note that I'm a firm believer in the KISS principle.

Hi GLC

5 weeks thats a long one, hope you had a good time. I can't picture you away from a computer for that long. :-)

Ya I did have a problem there, some of your buddies took over for you, and helped me fix it. Don't my little problems/toys mean job security, for you and your buddies and your Boss Dave. By the way he is away a lot too.

Now on this certificate thing does "Geotrust", or "Equifax" ring a bell. When I was nosing around this certificate thing I found these and they sound familiar. By the way this thing comes up for sure every time I open Outlook mail. And at other times too. I did a search on my computer and it did not bring up anything for both of these.

Thanx....Gunny

Geotrust is in fact in the SSL certificate business, but Equifax is a credit reporting agency.

Rocking and rolling all night and partying everyday?

I agree with GLC, Gunny. I have a relative who installed anything and everything that sounded appealing. They just bog a system down and end up eventually causing problems. My advice is to pick and choose more selectively and not install so close together. That way it is easier to see which thing is causing a problem.

Hi GLC

Ya I have been doing some reading on these too. You are right. But why would they be involved with my Outlook mail. I did a registry search for either of them did not come up with anything. Do you have any idea of where thay are coming from.? I did a plain old search on my computer and did not come up with anything that way either.

I thought maybe I was done with the very strange things happening to me computer, but here I go again.

Hi quartet man

Ya I have to agree with you both, you are right. I am very careful, but no matter how careful you are at times this will happen. I don't want people on here to think I just download anything and every thing that comes down the pike. I don't and I am very careful at what I do download.

Lets face it you buy your tickets and you take your chances How many of us paid big bucks to see a good movie and wished they hadn't. :-)

You might want to try out Windows Live Mail, that's what I'm using now and it works great.

I switched from Thunderbird, it will probably be easy to import all you address books etc. from Outlook since they are both Microsoft.

Live Mail is a substantial step backward from Outlook........

Even Outhouse Express is better.

Also, the fact that I have to *download* it (rather than it being packed in the Windows 7 CD), impresses me not.

Hi Mike.. I do use Live mail, and it does work good, been using it for several years now and have never had a problem with it. I started use it when I found out Yahoo mail stopped letting the replies to PCmech posts get to your mail. Ya that is stupid but true. Now that Incredimail, has a bunch of things, talk about stupid things.

And just like GLC says Outlook is way ahead of Live mail. And I am talking about features that you use every day, sure there are a lot of things I don't use and probably never will. But like so often said well they are there if I ever do want to use them. Live does not give you that choice. The real beef I have with Outlook is it will not work with any animation, like in signatures, etc. But lowly Yahoo does. I know GLC is rolling his eyes about now, talking about gadgets in mail. :-)

Nuc ...I have never used Outlook Express, I have heard a lot of stories about it though.

Well I never used outlook, I used Thunderbird on my old computer.

When I got my new computer I was having problems with it in Windows 7 64 bit, so I looked to see what Microsoft was offering and it was Live Mail so that's what I got.

I have since installed a new version of Thunderbird witch works fine, but I have't tried to transfer all my address books etc to it, so I keep using Live Mail.
I really thought that Live Mail was a replacement for Outlook.

Since I don't have a very recent version of Microsoft Office I didn't even think about installing Outlook.

Hi All

Just for the heck of it, some one take a wild guess at what could cause the resolution to change when you boot up.? It is doing it on my Win 7 computer. I can tell it is not the normal resolution when my password screen comes up, it is real big. If I leave it at that and go ahead to my desktop it will set there for a second or so and then jump into the normal resolution, and of course my icons are all messed up.

I updated my Video card drivers and it was ok for a couple of weeks, then it started acting up again. So just some ideas. I am thinking Video card goofing around myself.

Just a wild guess but some place in the boot process the video card kicks in and takes over for the built in graphics drivers.

On mine it happens right after the loading Windows message goes off.

Maybe yours is kicking in late for some reason, like it's having problems finding the drivers or something. Try setting you resolution to 800 by 600 and rebooting and see what happens, I just tried it, really looks funny on my 24" monitor.

I guess I'd try and reinstall the drivers and see if the problem goes away again.
You might have it roll back to the last ones and then update again.

Hi Mike

Ya that sounds like some thing I can try. I will give it a go and see what happens, it sure cant hurt. I just hate having to move my icons all back in place again. I like them in certain places for easy find. I am thinking too about replacing my video card, it is one of the cheaper ones I remember.

Hi Redvette

You should check out Rocket Dock.
It's what I use all the time and I love it.

It works great, here are the links.

Info...

About RocketDock - RocketDock.com

Download...

Download RocketDock - RocketDock.com

Here is a picture of my desktop.

As you can see I have a lot of stuff installed, LOL.
I think there are 60 programs on my desktop between Rocket Dock and the task bar. And these are just the ones I use all the time.

This keeps everything at hand without cluttering up my desktop or having to open the start menu all the time.

When you mouse over the icons they enlarge and show a title so it's easy to find stuff.

The container icons on the left are ones I made myself, Flask of Files, Jug of Junk, and Urn of Unclutter are where I store stuff temporarily until it is filed or deleted plus a direct link to the Command Prompt.

that reminds me of stardock's launchpad that comes with object desktop. I used to love that feature in OS/2 (launch pad) and I bet thats where the idea came from.
