Should I replace Vista with windows 7 on Gateway MT3705

I just bought a used Gateway MT3705 core duo 1.6GHz 1 gig of RAM with Vista Home Premium. I have Windows 7 Professional OS which I had bought and installed on a Compaq V2000 but it ran slow so I reinstalled windows XP back on the V2000. Since it is no longer on the V2000 would there be any advantage to installing windows 7 on the Gateway MT3705 or should I leave Vista on it, thanks.

I have found 7 to run better than Vista on all hardware configurations that I have tried it on, so I would say go for it. I mean it's just going to sit around unused anyway, right? One big advantage is that you won`t have to manually remove all the crapware that comes with laptops, you`ll have a clean install of Windows 7. I also think you will find performance to be better.

You will possibly have to download some drivers from Gateway's website. Maybe not, 7 is pretty good with taking care of drivers on its on.

1 gig of RAM is really slow for running XP, Vista or Win7.

Go to Crucial's website and find out how much RAM your computer can accept and what type of RAM it accepts. 4 gigs is ideal for most users.

Computer memory upgrades for Gateway MT3705 Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com

2 gigs maxes it out. I'd probably downgrade it to XP, if you can get drivers.

2 gigs of RAM not showing

I just upgraded it from 1 gig to 2 gigs of RAM but the system only shows I gig of RAM installed. I downloaded CPUZ and it shows 2 gigs, why does does windows vista only show 1 gig installed?

Did you make sure both sticks are inserted fully? Are they in the right slots?

I forgot to mention that when it had the 1 gig of RAM the system showed 960 MB, I assume because 64MB was being used for the video, but after adding the extra 1 gig for a total of 2 gigs the system now shows 1 gig of RAM instead of the 960 MB.

The Bios shows system memory:633 KB & extended memory:958 MB. Both RAM sticks are PC2-5300 one brand is samsung and the other says memorystore.com. I also tried it with the samsung 1 gig and a 512 mb of kingston memory with the same results. I still don't understand why does CPUZ show the system with 2 gigs of memory. Happy Thanksgiving.

Have you looked at Gateway's support page for this machine to see if a BIOS update is needed for the system to recognise more than 1 GB of RAM?

I just had Crucial's website scan my system and it showed that I only had 1 gig of Ram.
