Windows live hotmail

I use hotmail as my main e-mail address.
Quite often when i recieve an e-mail with a
picture attaced it appears already opened in the text area.
If I attach a picture to an e-mail, it appears as a download item.
Can anyone explain this please.

When you send an email, if you insert a picture into the email, it should show within the email. When you attach a picture, it will be an attachment that will need to be downloaded.

When using the web based Hotmail client, it doesn't let you insert a picture, you can attach a picture or link to a picture in on online album.

Many thanks for the prompt reply. I suspected it was something like that.

Interesting.

So, if I want to send a picture, would changing the file extension (to something like "jpj") work?

The issue isn't that he can't send a picture, the issue is that he can't insert the picture into an email so that the receiver can view the picture when viewing the email, he can only attach the picture (with a thumbnail at most) that requires the recipient to download it before viewing it. Changing the extension would not help since Hotmail wouldn't know what to do with a file with an extension of "jpj".
