Checkbox on icons

Has anyone ever seen a small checkbox on the top left side of an icon? Also, in Windows Explorer there's a checkbox before folders and files? What is it and what does it do?

How to select multiple files in one click [ Windows Vista ]

I also have a programme I downloaded which does the same thing, but I cannot, for the life of me, remember its name

Ya, that seems to be it. I just wanted to make sure it's not the result of malware, as this machine's giving me a hard time.
