Question Icon problem

Hi Gang

Pass along any idea you might have for this, cause I know this can be one of those multiple things where many thing are involved.

I can start up my computer and when it gets to the desktop all my Icons are all messed up, they are just all scattered all over the place, no certain order, not like they were when I shut it down the night before. I can reboot it and they come back all arranged like I had them, why does it take a reboot to make them go back to the way I want them.? Plus when this messed up Icons happen, I also get this little box saying my resolution is wrong, but it is set to the correct resolution. But when I reboot that little box goes away too. As far as I know the video card drivers are up to date, and I am using win 7. I am using 2 computers on one monitor, and the other Win 7 loads up just fine, no messed up Icons.

I have tried a couple of those programs that arrange them in a certain order, I don't like that, I want them where I arranged them. Not alphabetical, or anything like that.

Thanx....Gunny

Weird, I haven't heard of that happening since maybe Windows ME. You could try Fences - it's a free app that allows you to create 'fences' - icon groups that keep your icons where you want them. It's great, I upgraded to the Pro version when it was on sale a little while ago.

Hi Vert

If it is weird I have had it or will be getting it. :-)

Ya I could understand this better if I rebooted and it came back the same way, messed up. But rebooting it makes it right, now that does not make sense at all. The video card I have is not the best but not the cheapest either, about the same quality as the one in my other computer, that is not having this problem.

Was you having the same problem.? The reason you went to this "Fences".?

Thanx.....Gunny

Not on my desktop, I just find it really useful for keeping my desktop from getting cluttered. Now I don't have tons of icons all over the place. It's great for organizing stuff.

But, now that I think about it, I did have a similar problem with my laptop and Windows XP, using Fences helped. You said you're using multiple monitors. I had my laptop connected to my 24" monitor, and when I turned my laptop on, the icons would be scrambled like you say. I think it has something to do with Windows detecting the resolution of the second monitor.

Try using only one monitor and see if it continues to happen. If not, great; if it does, I don't know what the issue could be but I recommend trying Fences out.

Ahh, okay. I'm not sure what the problem could be, then.

Hi Gang

I downloaded a program called simple enough, "Icon restore". And so far it seems to be doing the job.

Hi

If your video drivers are not up to date I would try doing that.
It sounds like something is reporting your resolution incorrectly and that is causing the icon to not appear where they should.

Hi Mike

I just did up date them about 3 or 4 weeks ago, I guess I could try that again. I did think it could be the video card, it is a cheapie I know. Maybe Santa will bring me a new one. :-)

Hi All

I did all the updates I could find for the Video card, now it seems to do it just on start up, not on reboots.

You tell me this is really getting strange.

Thanx....Gunny

Hi GLC

Toys, me you must be kidding. Honest on a stack of Bibles. Nothing new at all, I have been very good and using a lot of self control. :-)

No I have used that Icon repair program and it has been working good until the last couple of mornings when I turn the computer on. I can click on the computer Icon and click on repair the desktop, and it does not repair it like normal, but if I reboot the desktop comes back like it should be.

I don't like using a program for something that should be right all by itself.

Take care.....Gunny ha ha accusing me of doing something dumb, now that takes the cake. :-)

Gunny, I've been dealing with jarheads most of my life - you KNOW that it takes one of us squids to keep you on your toes!

Jarheads I thought it was Leathernecks we were called. It takes more then one Squid to keep an eye on a good Marine. And one of those Squids eyes might be a little blackened. :-).

A good marine is always on his toes, especially around some of those Squids.

Take care......Gunny

Hi Gang

So all kidding aside is some one going to take a shot at helping me on this.? I have done a lot of reading and nothing seems to hit it on the head. I am sure the brains on this forum have run across this before.

Thanx...Gunny

What video card DO you have? You might want to update your sig, or post the specs of the system.

Hi GLC

Good idea I have been meaning to do just that. I have the latest drivers for my Video card. But I will check that again. My newer Video card when bad on me so I put an older card in now, and I still have the same icon problem but the whole system seems to be moving faster now, which struck me funny because this is an old card and not as good a card as the one that went bad on me.

I know I know, don't question it just accept it and move one. :-)

Lets see if I remember how to put my stuff on here.

Thanx....Gunny

If you are running a 6600GT, I'd use older drivers, such as the 190 series.

Hi GLC

Thanx. I thought it use to show up in every post. If I remember right. That is before the moderazation. :-) I hope having this stuff listed will help. I know that was like asking a mech what is wrong with a car with the car not present.

Ha ha still no fix for my Icon problem. I did the update for my Video card, surprised they had one for that old card. Still the same problem. I am thinking it might be a bug causing this, but I have done several scans with updated software, nothing shows up. All the fixes I read about seem to be registry problems.

Thanx....Gunny

We implemented the one sig per thread a few years ago.

Did you try the 190 series driver? You can get that from the archived drivers section of the Nvidia drivers site.

Hi GlC

Ya I did that no change. Is it possible that a bug could be causing this or something in the registry doing this.?
