hot mail problem in Vista

My grandson has a laptop computer with vista home installed or at least I think its that but it is vista for sure.
Anyway recently I have been getting emails from him on my hot mail which are usually advertisements for something sometimes sex downloads viagara plus even ones asking me if I am interested in earning money on the computer the subect is hello Hi or something like that which would make me think it was from him once opened I knew it wasn`t . I than sent him an email and told him what has been happening he than told me that he had changed his email to using gmail last year which I knew he changed his Email but didn`t know the reason. Reason he had changed it that some of his friends were getting these emails from him that were from some hacker. Unfortunately he didn`t tell the rest of his friends on hot mail so reason I am getting them. I have blocked his email from my hotmail but am wondering how he can get rid of whats happening to other people in his address book which have no idea that this can occur.
I asked in hotmail there solution is to go in and change hotmail password and maybe account but what about all the people whose addresses this hacker now has. Or should he just change his password and maybe account and send his friends a notice to block his email in hotmail.
A long question but really need an answer

The emails people are getting showing up as if from him. right? They might not have the other people's emails, and are sending through his email. Yeah, he should change his password (if not delete the hotmail), but he needs to also check his computer for trojans and viruses just to be sure. So, he should scan with antirvirus and then with Malwarebytes. Then, reboot and scan again to make sure they are gone (if something was found the first time).

Also run SuperAntiSpyware, my favorite malware scanner.
I have found it to sometimes find stuff that Malwarebytes doesn't.

SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloads

Pick the free one.
