Sharing Printers with Windows 7 and Windows XP

Hello Everyone,

What I am attempting to complete is a printer network between my Windows 7 Pro (64 Bit) machine and Windows XP Pro (32 bit) machine. I have been able to successfully get file sharing to work between both the Windows 7 machine and the Windows XP Machine. I have not been able to get the Windows XP machine to connect to the Win 7 machine to ultimately connect to the printer.

I used the following tutorial after I failed at getting the printers to network: Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP - How-To Geek

I was able to share the printer between multiple Windows 7 machines, but that did not take rocket science to figure out. I know the Windows 7 printer driver is not going to work since it is a 64 bit driver. Would it be in my best interest to connect the printer to the Windows XP machine and install the drivers and such for 32-bit? Seems to me that its a driver incompatibility between the two machines. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

Does the XP machine "see" the Win7 connected printer? If so, have the XP drivers ready for installation on the XP pc. If not, you may have to logon to the Win7 machine with the correct user name and password, assuming you are using a pwd on the Win7 pc. Even tho that geek article says you can do it by turning off the pwd requirement, it may not allow access.

We've got a couple of customers with this same problem, XP refusing to play nice with Windows 7 (or is it the other way around) and printers being unable to be networked. Please, do tell if your approach worked.

If you followed that tutorial then I dunno. I had the same problem for doing the same thing. Mine was totally a driver issue in the XP machine, which I solved somehow. Been too long and I'm not that sharp but the drivers were the biggie for me.

Panama,

When I view the work-group on the Win XP machines and select the Win 7 machine, I can see the printer there. When I try to connect, it prompts me for the driver since it cannot download it from the Win 7 machine. I will move the printer to the Win XP machine sometime today, and install the driver. It doesn't seem to cooperate without the Lexmark printer connected.

Thanks

Just make sure you have the correct driver for the printer installed on both machines and your printer should work. Be sure that the machine hosting the printer is turned on.
