printing from two wireless computers to wins 7 pro
Hello People well its been awhile but these old bones aren't what they used to be.
Built a new system for some one (win 7 Pro) and then had to transfer all data from a three year old XP Pro machine ( Transfer wizard does not transfer outlook files.) Any way got all transferred installed office 2007 in new system. Actually After the build the Win 7 computer went in as a wireless and The XP was tied to the router and printer. Swapped positions of the two computers that is the new one win 7 and the wireless is XP Pro. And a lap top was added . Had a time with drivers (linksys) in the Xp machine but its all together now and I have one obstacle left. In the lap top Win 7 or the xp machine I can't access the printer on the new win 7 machine. Like in XP I do search for ( phenon) name of new build,it finds it but I can't open it to see the printer and make it default although it is set as default on the XP machine .. The message I get is no administrative authorization in the win 7 lap top and the old XP machine . I have shared every thing in the new win 7 machine and give all permissions ... What am I missing m ![]() ![]() Merry Christmas to all and wish you all a happy and healthy new year AL ![]() PS I can access the internet from the lap top and the XP machine

I've pretty much given up on getting printers to share nicely between different versions of Windows. I use printers with Ethernet ports or use a USB print server.

Hey GLC ...it seems to be some sort of administrative issue though in win 7. I am not sure where i have to give permissions..

Win 7 really wants XP machines to bootup and log in in with a username and password. And its easier if the user name is the same on all machines.

Neither machines have user names or log in . but when in xp and do search for computers it finds the computer with the printer but then a double click on that will not open the pathway. It gives me the error" you do not have permissions "and its the same with the laptop running win 7..

Me thinks you should consider doing the above. Then you might get permissions and make Win 7's newer security features like you better

It's a little box with a USB port and Ethernet port. You plug the printer into it, and plug it into your router.
Are you sure your printer doesn't already have an Ethernet port? More and more of them do these days. What's the printer model? |

GLC I kind of new that and I saw they have wireless as well which eliminates the the computer hook up entirely...
Just wanted to be sure what I thought was accurate about the connection with a non wireless..... Any way I did it the hard way and have all 3 computers printing to the cannon MX700 ... Just gained some knowledge. Which do you prefer the usb or the wireless.. Thanks a bunch AL ![]() ![]()

The specs I see on that device indicate that it has an Ethernet port. That is how you should be networking it - connect it to your router, not a computer. How the computers communicate with the router is immaterial. The documentation should tell you how to install it on each computer in this mode.

Again, Al - if the printer has an Ethernet port you should be using that and connecting it to your router, not using the USB port and connecting it to a computer.

Thanks . I never even noticed and they have had that printer for at lest a couple of years. I remember in the install it ask how you are going to connect it and although I don't recall the exact instructions the last one was connect via usb. the other two sounded like other computers connecting through that one for the internet or something to that effect.
Any how Its not broken and I will leave it ,but be sure to know if an issue arises I will gladly take your advice and do the ethernet port . They are usually pretty busy there(taxidermy shop) and every body gets grouchy If I want to work on something unless its after five. Thanks for all the info ,I just noticed we both joined Pc mech the same year . It seems like such a long time ago and I was just messing with my first build. I certainly have learned a lot from you and some others( and by determination ) and of course the courses I took . But at this stage I try to keep busy and enjoy making a few extra bucks ocationally ![]()
