Installing 64bit Java/Finding Installation Path on W7?
Hi all,
I've been trying during the past few days to install Java 64 bit (Java 32 Bit was installed on my Computer by default, strangely.) Unfortunately, whenever I download it from Java's site, when I search for Java.exe nothing shows up- Not even the 32 bit version (I saw it on the control panel originally.) Does anyone know what the problem is? Any help would be great. I'm currently using Windows 7. Thanks, -Josh |

Hi
Try downloading and installing.... Locate32 - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com Windows 7 search leaves a lot to be desired. I found it at C:\Program files x86\java\jre6\bin Mike |

Windows Vista and 7 search couldn't find the start button.
If any 64-bit version of Java was installed you'll find it under "Program Files" (not "Program Files (x86)" ).

Hi
Windows 7 HP 64 bit and mine is under Program Files x86. I don't have a Java folder under Program Files at all. Am I still running the 32 bit version, it has updated several times in the last month or so. How would I tell? Mike Last edited by MikeMoss; 01-14-2011 at 11:59 PM. |

Well, again, ANYTHING 64-bit is installed under "Program Files". ANYTHING 32-bit is put in "Program Files (x86)".
Another way to tell is to open the Task Manager and look in the Processes tab. Anything with a *32 (say, javaw.exe *32) is a 32-bit app, whereas anything without that suffix is 64-bit. |

OpenOffice was the other one I thought was 64 bit and ended up under (86). Am I missing something?

Yes, iTunes, though being "64-bit", actually runs as a 32-bit app. I dunno why Apple does that. You can see for yourself, start iTunes and then open the Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and you'll see that the iTunes process has a *32 right next to it.
Same with other apps. Other programs like 64-bit Photoshop still install the 32-bit version in addition to the 64-bit. The reason for this is that not all 3rd party plugins developed for a certain program might be 64-bit-compatible, so the developer is just thinking ahead. |

Hi
I realized that because I don't use internet explorer it never installed the 64 bit version of Java on my computer, since Google Chrome and Mozilla are both 32 bit. Mike |

Here's a good explanation of the need for 32 or 64 bit straight from Java.
Which version of Java should I download for my Windows 64-bit operating system? |

Hi
I just went to the Java site and asked to manually download 64 bit Java for Windows 7 64 bit. When I ran the install it said "This software is already installed on your computer". I still have only one Java folder and it is under Program Files x86. So maybe if you have both 64 and 32 bit versions installed it puts them both in the same place. Mike |
