Waking Up from sleep mode

OK I am trying to help a friend get their computer running. It is a HP computer couple of years old. While this is whats going on. The computer runs fine until it goes to sleep mode. When you try to wake it up you can hear and see the blue light on the tower like it is waking up, but the video never comes on. Also, even if you turn it off and restart the machine it still will not display the video. You have to turn it completely off and wait a while before trying again. We ruled out monitor and cords. We tried 2 different HDMI cords and a vga cord. It isn't the monitor and I tried putting a different video card in the machine to. Updated drivers and it still does the same thing in sleep mode. I also tried resetting the bios but still nothing. another issue they had in the past not sure if it could be related, but the SATA ports on the MB were not working so they have a little RAID PCI-E card in there for their HDD and DVD-ROM. Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Simple solution? Disable sleep mode. Sounds like this computer has some hardware issues and it's best not to mess with it.

Possibly Windows. I once worked on an LG laptop that was running Vista and had issues with sleep/hibernation as well. In the case of that laptop it was worse: you'd wake it up to a BSOD. Restoring it to out-of-box status fixed the problem. In your case, however, I'd do as G says, the power "savings" don't really justify the grief. For that matter you can just shut it off completely, since that's what you have to do all the time to get it going! Ain't HPs a beauty?
