WIN 7 64 vs 32
I have access to purchase Microsoft software for student prices.
The choices are Ultimate (32bit only), Professional (64bit or 32bit), Home Premium (64bit or 32bit). This is my home PC and I surf web, check email, and do a little gaming. This will be a new build PC with an i3 processor. I have been told some software won't work on a 64bit OS. Which one do you recommend going with? Thanks.

Unless you need to log into a domain, Home Premium is all you need.
If a program won't run on 64-bit Win 7, it won't run on 32-bit either. There aren't that many 64-bit apps so most of the apps you will install on a 64-bit system will be 32-bit.

The best is the Pro, 64-bit. It allows you to have more control of the system and it also has the Windows XP Mode which will allow you to run old programs.

Hi
I'm running Windows 7 HP and everything runs on it, even my old Tomb Raider games that go clear back to the 90s. The only exception I found was Adobe Indesign CS2. It just wasn't compatible with 64 bit and Adobe said so. I have over 90 software programs installed and that was the only one that didn't run. All my other Adobe software works fine. But since you have the option, if you wan't to spend the extra cash it wouldn't hurt to go with the pro version. Mike |

I have machines with HP & Pro. I have installed XP mode (it is a separate download and install) on the Pro machines but have never found it necessary to use it for any of the software I run.
You can have the same functionality as XP mode in HP by installing free software such as VirtualBox. The difference is that you will need to have your own copy of XP to install in VirtualBox whereas XP mode installs it's own licensed copy of XP. |

If you want to use more than 3gb of ram you should use 64 bit. If you want to use more than 4gb you MUST use 64 bit.
