I have been doing my research concerning cloning my Win 7 C: HDD. In another thread I was troubleshooting an BSOD boot up loop. So, while I have been able to fix all my issues. I now have a new fresh hard drive and a fresh install of Win 7 on that drive. Is it possible to use PCMover to move over my data and installed programs? I am concerned that the OS on the now removed hard drive is corrupt.
Thanks. |

Like I told you in your original thread, you have to reinstall all your apps. Data can simply be copied over using Windows Explorer.

I guess looking around and reading the various posts and reading up on other products was useless. Here I was hoping for some good dialog, only to receive another snarky response from glc. I am starting to remember why I greatly reduced my activity here.

Excuse me? I'm giving you an honest answer! I guess that's not what you want to hear.
Sorry I haven't met your expectations. Good luck with your issue. |

I personally have never used PC Mover but I doubt I would trust it because there's just too many variables involved to move installed apps to a different disk. Maybe someone who has used it successfully will chime in with a different opinion but until then I think GLC is giving you good advice.

Okay, let's put this in full perspective. Windows software installs itself all over the drive, not just in its own folder in Program Files. It installs system files in the Windows folder structure, it installs stuff in Users, and it makes registry entries. Sure, there is software that CLAIMS to be able to go after all the needed stuff, but this is based on a properly operating system to begin with! You did NOT have a properly operating system. How do you know that this kind of "shortcutting" isn't going to put you back where you started from? You DON'T. How do you know that one of these "moves" won't overwrite a system file that was the cause of your original issue? You DON'T. I know it's time-consuming to rebuild a system after a reformat/reinstall, but it's the ONLY way I, as a professional, will do it. Spend your time doing it RIGHT and you will have a much cleaner system to work with.
Now, back to the alleged "snarkiness" - I apologize if you took it that way, but I DID tell you concisely what you needed to do in your previous thread, but you chose to ignore my advice like I didn't even post it and started a NEW thread anyway. I feel rather insulted too! You didn't even give ME the courtesy of a reply asking for clarification. Our policy here, as with most forums, is to keep all items related to an issue in one thread until they are solved. I'm sorry if you were not aware of that and I do apologize for not going into excruciating detail in both of my replies. |

This is a long overdue response to glc.
I would like to say that a combination of my frustration and lack of knowledge of certain things got the best of me. While I appreciate your insight and experience I sometimes would read your response as "you should know this". Not that you ever intended it to be taken that way. As I have seen from your posts you have a level of knowledge that I can only one day hope to achieve. I will admit in my hast that I started a second thread as I felt that moving only the data from the hard drive would be different from the original thread. So, I will fall on my sword regarding this thread and force myself not to post until I have more complete information. Some people learn by trail and error. I guess that is me while starting a fire that I have to walk through. Thank you for your post on 2-15-2011. |
