Quote:
What's included in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an important update that includes previously released security, performance, and stability updates for Windows 7. SP1 also includes new improvements to features and services in Windows 7, such as improved reliability when connecting to HDMI audio devices, printing using the XPS Viewer, and restoring previous folders in Windows Explorer after restarting.
Its due out next week... Or get it today if you have a TechNet or MSDN subscription.

I'm just wondering what SP1 will break. Most SP's I've installed/deployed do something or other--usually to 3rd-party software.

More realistic to wonder what it WON'T break. Let's play it smart and have the early adopters try it out for a few months before installing it ourselves.

Hal, if WinME did nothing to you, I guess you're SP-proof.

Never had a prob with Win ME or the updates associated with it. Everyone said it was slower, yet all my computers were faster. Boot times dropped by ~25-50%, applications were snappier, etc.

I can see waiting a couple weeks just in case, but not a few months.

That was my experience with Vista! Go figure.

Most ppl will be "testing" SP1 without even knowing it: most people have automatic updates turned on.

Hmm, I wonder if that's how machines end up with no sound.

Well, possibly, but I think it has more to do with a wife that was messing with the system when the built in monitor speakers weren't loud enough for her when watching her DVD's.

It sounds like the bad luck Dave has with Fords is made up by his good luck with computers.

Well, one computer barrier remains for Hal's legendary luck to break: an AMD-powered computer!

Well, I'm not going to blame the AMD chip, but rather the VIA chipset. The only problem I've ever had with any OS was with windows ME on an AMD system running a VIA chipset. I've built AMD on AMD, nVidia, and SiS, the latter being a dog for performance... and the only one that would constantly lock up and blue screen was the VIA system.

The release candidate for IE9 is on windows update site now. I have been using the beta for a while now and it has been flawless.

There it is, downloaded and sitting in my Microsoft Update page. I can't say I am itching to pull the trigger.

I dowloaded and installed it. So far working just fine.It does load sites very fast. Microsoft says that it takes advantage of your gpu to speed things up such as streaming video from the net. I guess time will tell.

I jumped the gun and downloaded and installed W7 SP1 on my Dell laptop. Everything is working fine and don't have any obvious problems.
Sooooo, I downloaded it on my wife's pc and mine also.
Both installations failed and gave me a 80004005_DT000 error code. Tried to look up what to do but to no avail.

Anybody else have this problem?

Carl

Is there somewhere a list of what's included in the service pack? The download page provides no information whatsoever. Typical M$.

I'm with you HAL, I've installed every fix and service pack for years and never had an issue.

I have installed W7 SP1 on a laptop, a netbook (both 32-bit) as well as a 64-bit desktop and all are running fine. I have a couple more 32-bit desktops I will install it on in the next few days.

Thanks, usnavyretired. This SP looks pretty much like XP's SP3: entirely useless. I was expecting something such as one big pack that would include ALL the gazillion updates that have been being released since Windows 7 came out, something that would speed turnout times when working on machines on which one has to do a nuke and pave.

Just like I did with XP SP3, I'll pass on this pack. If I'm still using Windows when SP2 comes out, I'll see if it's worth installing it.
