Protect files/folders in Windows 7
Is there a reliable way to protect files/folders in Windows 7 Premium? I am shipping off my laptop to Dell for them to fix some issues with it and do not want them lurking. Though they said they won't it would be nice to still password protect all my important files before shipping the laptop.
Thanks Dave |

Not without 3rd party utilities. Best thing is to copy your files to an external drive and then delete them off the laptop.

I was looking at folder lock application or? because of the amount of gigs of data already on it, and I am supposed to get back to work (out-of-town) so my time is too short to back up everything. Too much to configure, setup, backup, search for backup space just not possible to do that.

Then just trust them. You should have backups, though, what if they have an accident and the data is lost whilst they're working on it. No amount of apologies andor compensations will get you that data back. Same with 3rd party "lockers", what if they lock it real good and then you lose stuff?

Actually everything is already backed up but it took me hours to set it all up the way I need it. It's a very long story but it would be nice to just encrypt backup my new setup to have to delete it and start over.
Anyway I will make a decision here shortly thanks though. |

In the meanwhile, maybe other members can drop by and recommend a 3rd party encrypter.

TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows 7/Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux
Not to give you a hard time, but learning how to perform the encrypting operations with any software will take time. There's just no "press a button and it's done" solution. |

Don't be surprised if Dell does a system recovery. NEVER assume that when you have a computer worked on, they will leave your files alone.
