Suspected Virus causing BSOD.

Hello,

A while back I started receiving unfrequent BSOD of IRQL not less or equal with various stop codes, I suspected a memory issue however recently the BSOD's have become alot more frequent and my computer ends up just freezing or blue screening. Even on startup when it's just about to show the desktop it blue screens. I scanned AVG 9.0 and nothing came up, I also realised that the suspected virus keeps turning my windows security centre service off and also keeps changing my google search results to crappy search engines instead of the link I wanted.

I ran Hi-Jack this and got rid of a few entries that seem to be unusual however there is one roawa.exe that runs on startup that is refusing to delete or be repaired.

I just wondered if you guys had any advice before I borrow an external hard drive and carpet bomb by hard drive and reinstalled windows 7?

Thankyou

Rob.

Run a deep scan with updated MSE and MalwareBytes in Safe Mode. AVG is not so good anymore.

It may or may not be malware. Were you able to record the error code from the BSOD?

You need to download the Ultimate Boot CD and run diagnostics on your hardware. That BSOD is related to hardware, not software.

I ran the ultimate boot cd, I did a CPU stress test, seagate harddrive test, 2 different types of mem test and they all passed fine.

I also did a malwarebytes scan and found 4 trojan horse viruses that AVG did not pick up. My computer is still BSOD'ing when I load windows in non-safe mode, and sometimes freezes in safe mode. Im in a bit of a muddle what to do next? I'm bit confused also on how to run MSE?

Thanks for your time.

Rob.

(update)

Common stop codes that I keep getting are:
0x000000A
0x0000003B
0x0000001E

Thanks.

Uninstall AVG and install MSE. It works the same way.

Tried running MSE in safe mode without networking, ends up freezing or BSOD'ing about three quarters of the way through. The BSOD's have got so bad on loading normal windows I cant even get passed the blue welcome screen and onto normal desktop :/

Thankyou.

Is safe mode BSOD-overridden too?

I'm wondering if it may be something really simple like a failing power supply. Have you checked your voltages? Reseated everything in a slot? Reseated your other connectors? Hardware can cause BSOD's as well.

I had a machine in last week that was exhibiting similar bsod's. Turned out to be a failing power supply. The +5V leg was flakey when connected to my digital tester. New psu installed and it's up and running. Worth testing yours.

DavidM:
I moved my connections along into the adjacent slots, and still got the BSOD's

Krusader:
Safe mode isn't as BSOD over-wridden, I'm trying to rule out viruses by scanning MSE but for example I can't get to the end of a scan due it freezing or blue screening.

As a last resort I could definantly look into using a multi-meter or powersupply tester, is there such thing as a software power supply tester that could detect the fault also? The fact that the blue screens have got a lot more frequent just recently does imply that it could be a failing power supply; its just testing it that i don't have the knowledge or equipment to do so as of yet :/

Thankyou.

Install Asus PC Probe, it can monitor the +3.3, +5, and +12v rails.

Getting more frequent BSOD's now even in safe mode, tried installing PC probe but failed to install due ansinhelp.dll wouldn't initialise. Apparently due to some google search researching I need a compatibile ACPI Asus Mobo which I thought I had. Any other programs? Or should I RMA my Corsair.

Thankyou

You do have an ACPI motherboard. Are you trying to install PC Probe from a download or from the motherboard support disk?

You can check the voltages in the bios, take a quick look and see what they are.

It may very well be that all you need is a nuke and pave.

Did a nuke and pave and system booted and worked fine. I guess the virus must have corrupted some system files or something =)

Thanks for all your help guys.
