changing name on "users" folder
i am selling a laptop to a co-worker but am having troubles changing the user name. This is windows 7 home premium 64 bit. The folders under "users" are the "public" and the my name. I want to change it from my name to their name but it has a lock symbol on the icon and I cannot figure out how to do it.
I was able to go into user accounts and change the name there, no problem. But the "users" folder will not change also. How do I do this? |

If you are selling the laptop, I'd advise that you do a full system recovery first to put it back to the way it came from the factory.

After the full recovery, it would probably be nice to do all the Windows updates instead of sticking the buyer with it. You could even ask the their choice of Antivirus (if freebie) and install that too.

You can't rename a user folder. There are TONS of entires in the registry that refer to it.
I too would do a clean install... Or you could create a new user profile and disble the first one.

I understand that sometimes the answers we need are not the ones we want. If you create a new user account (Admin) I am not sure that it would be able to access all of the programs, printer etc. I recently had problems with that and activating the guest account. However, you might be able to get it to work and then delete your original account. I am not sure I would recommend it though.
Nonetheless, I presume you have programs, data, etc. on it that you would want to remove and that you would want to make sure that your data was off of it and safe, so really this is for the best in the long run. A pain, yes, but for the best. |
