vista home only seeing 2 gigs memory

ok I"m not up to date with how the memory goes. I know you need 64 bit to see 4 gigs or maybe it's higher than 4 gigs. My husband has a dell vostro A860
I have 2 gig stick in DIMM A and I tried to put a 1 gig stick that i know works - in DIMM B. I looked in windows after starting the machine and it looks like it's only seeing the 2 gigs. I tried googling, but it's not working out too well for me.

It appears that after doing a reboot, the memory is now found. Did nothing else, just did a reboot. I guess it wasn't found during the first boot process.
