Creating an image server
Would someone please give me what info they can on creating and implementing an image server.
I'd like to set one up for the school district I just need a direction to start in and where I might get more info. I would like to re-image student/staff PC's by drawing the image from a server through a PXE boot. Thanks in advance

No idea, but I worked with a company installing new POS machines. Once we set them up and turn them on, they would automatically download an image from a server off site and install everything.
Check these: http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/478 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...58(WS.10).aspx or this: http://www.farstone.com/support/faqs/pxeserver.htm

There is software available that's tailored for this kind of environment, and it doesn't require an image server. Google "reboot and restore".

@ glc, I'm looking to image several PC's at a time and I was thinking that downloading the image from a server would be the quickest and easiest.
Thanks Choboseki |

Seems to me that simply rebooting a workstation is easier than that! All personal files are kept on a file server, right?

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you - if you have a set of standard images for the initial setup on all the machines, then imaging over the wire would be the best way. My suggestion is for maintaining everything essentially automatically. For the initial imaging, I would assume that there are packages available from the major companies such as Acronis.

Nope, I stayed far away from all the pageantry. I'm doing fine, I wasn't affected, so it's best to stay out of the way unless I'm doing volunteer work. It's hard enough to get around town to begin with, and with the President here, it gridlocked.

Choboseki,
Would I be able to us the info from TechNet without buying 3rd party software? School district is on the broke side of the economy. Also need to use it for XP and Win 7 is somewhat easy? Thanks in advance, Larry |
