If you found your favorites in a different location, simply move them to the Favorites folder under your user name.

Go to this folder and see if your Favs are in there:

Computer/C: drive/Users/your name/Favorites

If they are not there, you need to find where they have been moved to and copy/paste them back to that folder. If they ARE there and are just not dropping down, try opening the Internet Options from the Control Panel. Select the Advanced tab and down at the bottom try using the Reset option.

Red, ok I found the file and got it back in the drop down tab, but now when you go to "start", "all programs" half the stuff like "accesories" and a buch of stuff is gone !! Microsoft Word was gone and I went to seach and found it and dragged it to the desktop. The folders that are there all say "empty"
Powerpoint is missing too but it must be here because I can open things that were done on power point...
Any idea of a fix for this
Thx

You haven't read the posts in that thread completely.

Several threads on the web have discussed this without resolution. Some even concluded that you have to create all the shortcuts yourself or do a repair install of XP. I stumbled upon the solution quite by accident. The Accessories>System Tools folder was empty (except for IE with no addons) so I tried a search, including hidden files, for Disk Cleanup. Low and behold, it was in a folder in Documents & Settings>User name>Local Settings>Temp>smtmp. Inside smtmp I found three numbered folders containing the missing shortcuts. Simply moved them to the User's Start Menu Folder and voila! - All is good again. I don't know if the same folder is used by each rogue malware so you may want to do a Search (include System and Hidden files) for Disk Cleanup or Disk Defragmenter. Then just browse to that file location and see what you find. This sure is easier than creating new shortcuts for each Program or doing a Repair Install!

Those icons will need to be moved to: C:/Documents and Settings/User name/Application data/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Quick Launch. I believe Folder 4 is desktop icons but I'm not certain of that.

You don't necessarily search for disk cleanup - you search for the things that are missing! Search for the exact name the shortcut had in your start menu.
