Where downloads get saved is a function of your browser, not the OS. Which browser (and version) are you using?

I am using Mozilla Firefox.
Think I found it. Is it the same as in Windows XP? |

What exactly is the same? And what version of Firefox are you running?

you have to browse folders and select your desktop. Keep in mind, it will default to that until you change to another download location.

I have my browsers set to always ask where to save them, and the desktop is the LAST place I would download to. I'm a firm believer in the desktop is for shortcuts, not files. All it takes is one time where the downloaded file is a self-extracting executable that doesn't prompt you where to extract to - and you double click it and it extracts a bunch of files to guess where - the desktop! Instant mess.

Thanks jdeb,
That's the way it works in XP. I will get the Win7 machine pretty much up and running tomorrow. |

I have always downloaded to the desktop and never had a problem but you make a valid point. I shall change my ways.

Hi
I'm kind of in between. I have a folder on my desktop called "New Downloads". I selected the arrow pointing down icon for it. Everything I download goes into that, then I move them to other folders later it I need to keep them. I always know where to look for the stuff, and I can run it from there if it's an install. About once every couple of weeks I go through and delete everything that I don't need to keep. Mike |

One of the main reasons why I don't save stuff to the desktop is that I found it easy to forget to back it up. This was a recipe for disaster in the days of Windows 95, which is when I got into the habit of never putting things other than shortcuts in the desktop. And even of shortcuts there weren't many, for the reason I'll mention below. This, of course, is no longer a concern since Windows XP, because the Desktop folder is kept inside the user account's folder.
The other reason is that items on the desktop get in the way of the wallpaper and detract from its beauty, they're like flies on a window that opens to a winter landscape, or like motes of dust on a camera sensor. There's one more reason not to put too many things on the desktop: it eats up memory. Now that most of us have at least 4GB of RAM this might no longer be so much a deal, but still. |
