Windows 7 Compatibility Questions

I recently purchase The Witcher on steam. Unfortunetly, i was stupid and didn't check that it doesn't run with Windows 7. However, I know that Windows 7 also has a compatibility mode to help with older programs taht wont work with windows 7. I tried to do this with steam and it still wont work. Has anyone had any success with this or have any other suggestions that I could try. Any help would be appreciated

If you upgrade to Windows 7 Professional, you can use XP Mode - which is running real XP inside a virtual machine.

Nevermind, just remembered that Steam likes to launch the games from within its own interface, rather than putting shortcut icons on the desktop.

You can put Steam game shortcuts on the desktop and launch from there.

In Steam, go to your Library. Right click on a game and then go down to Create Desktop Shortcut.

Does Steam still have to be running in the background?

Yeah, I checked, you have to have Steam running; if you don't, the shorcut will open Steam which in turn will launch the game. One reason I hate Steam. At least, this is the way it is in OS X, maybe in Windows you can run the game without Steam, though I doubt it.
