Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows

Introduction
To upgrade your PC from Windows XP to Windows 7, you'll need to select the Custom option during Windows 7 installation. A custom installation doesn't preserve your programs, files, or settings. It's sometimes called a "clean" installation for that reason.

A custom installation is more complex, and it can sometimes take a couple of hours to complete. We created this five-step tutorial to help guide you through the entire process each step of the way.

The only way to upgrade from XP to Win 7 without needing to reinstall all of your programs would be to first upgrade from XP to Vista, then upgrade from Vista to Win 7. I personally wouldn't recommend that route and prefer the custom or clean install EzyStvy referred to above.

Regardless of how you you do it, there may be software you are running now that won't work with Win 7, particularly drivers for hardware devices. Win 7 has drivers for many devices built-in and many manufacturers have updated their drivers to be Win 7 compatible but you may have drivers and other software that simply won't work with Win 7.

To see what software on your computer isn't Win 7 compatible you can download and run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor.

If you have software that won't run in Win 7, you will need to use Win 7 Professional and install XP Mode.
