I'm sure you could, but Dell has no Vista drivers available. Why would you WANT to?

How much ram does it have?

The most I would do is to max out the RAM.

Computer memory upgrades for Dell OptiPlex GX270 Series (Desktop and Mini-Tower) Desktop/PC from Crucial.com

That's some pretty expensive ram - I don't think it's worth it, that is, after all, an old Pentium 4.

I found this computer on an alley having only a bad hard drive, removed hd and it boots up fine. I have an old spare 40gb hd so I will install it and see what happens. thanks a lot guys now I know why vista was not mentioned anywhere as an option for this comp.- that's because of drivers not specs. I will try to install windows xp then and will try to find cheap ram as it looks like I can add 2 more GB. Hopefully I wont have problems with drivers as I never know which ones are important to load.

How much ram does it have now? How many modules does it have, and how many open slots does it have?

Dell has a full set of drivers for XP - the first one to install is the Intel chipset driver. Then you install video drivers, audio drivers, Ethernet drivers, and drivers for any add-on cards such as a 56k modem. When there are no longer any flagged devices in device manager, you are good to go.

It has 4 slots, 2 are used, 1GB in each slot - total 2GB.
So once I get rid of all the flagged device I should NOT install anything else right?
Once again thanks glc

With XP, I wouldn't bother upgrading the ram, 2gb is plenty.

Right - just install in the order I specified.

The 865G chipset is old enough where I believe SP2 will have drivers.

You might be right glc, my main computer has sata hd with windows xp sp2, and I installed it, but do not remember how I did it, it has an old p5ld2 motherboard. Do you think I should just try to install windows normally without any third party drivers? If it doesn't work I can always do it again right? It better works though because I cannot find a driver for this computer on dell website. Thanks much.

Try it, if it doesn't like it, it won't see the hard drive.
