So after a hdd crash, I bought a set of recovery discs and threw a new hdd in the laptop. Install was fine but I can't seem to get full use out of my hdd. This is what I see in Vista Disk Management when I right click the C: partition. I thought I could just "extend" it but apparently I'm missing something. My goal is to expand the C partition to be able to use the 164gb of free space. FYI I have no idea what the ST_SDV (D) drive is.

I don't know if you can. You may have to create a partition in the free space as a separate drive letter and use it for your data files.

You will need a partition manager to extend C: to occupy that free space without losing any data.
Here's info regarding some free partition managers: 5 Best Partition Manager Tools | Techyv.com Creating partition system for HDD | Techyv.com Personally, I've tried EASEUS Partition Manager and it's so easy to use. Another good one is MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition. Both are freeware. |

That may not work in this computer - the ST_SDV partition is in between the OS partition and the free space. I'm guessing that this is some sort of proprietary Compaq utility partition that shouldn't be disturbed.
