Help hard drive crashed win 7

Ok my wifes laptop hard drive crashed Toshiba with win 7. It did not come with a restore disc so...I had to buy a new hard drive (70.00) and pay a guy 100.00 to install Win7 and all the drivers etc...Now is there a way of getting this done if it happens agin without paying 100.00 ??
I mean if it happens again could I just buy a new hard drive and find a free disc or download online ?? Or would I have to go back to Toshiba an pay the 30.00 for the restore disc ?? Or could I copy the whole thing after this guy fixes it ??
Thanks guys

I haven't seen a laptop come with a restore disc for awhile. The restore part is on a secure partition on the HD and simply a matter of punching some keys when first booting up to access it. It restores it to the day you bought it. I'm assuming you bought it new with that drive in it? Once you installed a different drive, all bests are off and Toshiba will/probably tell you to kiss their arse. If you want to have some fun and learn , why not put the original drive back in and punch the keys at boot and see if you can restore? Won't cost you a penny.

Win 7 has built-in capability to do a system image backup of your hard drive which will allow you to create your own restore disk that will restore your computer back to the way it was when you did the backup instead of how it came from the factory.

I am assuming the problem was you didn't have a product key or disc for windows? If that is correct then just download ProduKey - Recover lost product key (CD-Key) of Windows/MS-Office/SQL Server run it and write down your product keys. Then if it happens again go to Download Windows 7 - Microsoft Windows download and burn the proper version and install it to the new HDD. During installation you will be asked for your product key, type in the key you have saved and you should be good to go.

Your laptop has the utility to make recovery cd's. You may need to download it from their website if it is not automatically installed but obviously it is too late.

The best thing to do is call the laptop manufacture and order the recovery discs. They might even give you them for free but expect to pay around 30.00
