WGA Question
Twice that I remember (maybe a couple of other times I can't) over a year and a half or so, I've seen the message from WGA that I need to run a program from Microsoft to verify that I have a genuine Windows 7 installation.
I run the program and it ends up saying everything is OK. This isn't so much a problem as it is an aggravation. What can cause this? I have not recently upgraded my hard drive or added memory so I would think my machine footprint should not have changed. I will add that I had trouble with the original installation and had to have Microsoft help me out over the phone but I haven't had any issues since then other than this one, and only twice that I can remember, out of many, many start-ups of my laptop. I know it's genuine software, and I don't want to turn this WGA feature off. I just wonder what might be making it want to re-check to see that it is genuine software. I'm just curious and am willing to live with a semi-annual check (it really has been a rare occurrence). I have a dual-boot setup with Linux, but I use the Windows bootloader to do the multi-booting, not GRUB. I use Neosmart's Easy BCD to edit the Windows bootloader file. Other than this, the only issue I have is a few corrupted files and an occasional reboot screen asking to check my hard drive for integrity. Perhaps this has something to do with it? Thanks, Donald Last edited by t2000kw; 02-11-2012 at 02:05 PM. |

I would advise you to run manufacturer's diagnostics on the hard drive.

What is the make and model of the laptop?
Hitachi Drive fitness test would do the trick if there is not any hardware diagnostics that come with your laptop. Here is the link for the application. Downloads |

This is an Acer Aspire 5630 laptop. I know it has trouble keeping the heat down. I may end up opening the case and blowing out the dust/dirt/fuzz that is likely inside the cooling path. I've had the BSOD appear a couple of times recently when there was a lot of activity going on at the CPU level. It didn't help matters when I installed a larger hard drive with a higher rpm then the stock one. I'm sure it generates more heat than the stock hard drive because of the higher rpms. Donald |
